In my kindergarten class, almost all of my students are at a solid Stage Two: letter name-alphabetic spelling stage. My students know the consonant sounds and short vowel sounds. They are beginning to sounds things out and it shows in their writing. In one writing sample, a child was trying to write the word "home". She started sounding it out and was able to write "hom". The students work hard at sounding out words while they are writing. They will sometimes us a letter chart to help them with the letters.
A center I would want to put in the classroom would to be focused around blending. The students are at a point where they can start learning the "h" brothers (sh, ch, th), and start blending "r" in words. Even the students at a lower level will benefit from more simple blendings like "c-a-t, cat". A blending station I believe will help continue to refine the students skills that they already have.
